United by a sense of optimism and faith in the resilience and adaptability of the ocean, yet tempered by the humility of human culpability and the awe of all we have yet to understand, we propose to create an art exhibition / video projection that can reach a vast audience and inspire a sense of the sublime. The video projection concept of abstracted imagery will portray the sheer magnitude of marine microbial networks and the role they play in ocean memory and mediating complex processes in the deep sea, on our planet, and across the universe. Our vision for the projection is to illuminate the facade of a building on a monumental scale in a highly visible and meaningful location (e.g. the Hirschhorn Museum on the Washington Mall). Through beauty and a dynamic portrayal of our oceans and its microworlds on a macroscale, utilizing moving images and animations that reveal the complexity and connectivity of marine microbial networks, we will create a compelling and abstract visual narrative to generate awe and empathy. By bridging art and science, we will inspire and educate. By connecting ourselves with the ocean using the evocative metaphor of memory, we will foster a dialogue about ocean conservation in the face of human impacts, including climate change.
