Workshops are at the heart of the Ocean Memory Project. They are our primary means for bringing together diverse voices to explore what we can learn by researching and reflecting upon the memories that the ocean holds and how they may determine our future. Through these gatherings, we use successful transdisciplinary collaboration to seek innovative pathways and create positive impact.
In each workshop, participants from a wide range of disciplines and cultural backgrounds are invited to share their work, exchange perspectives, and collaborate in a horizontal and open format. The goal is not only to deepen our understanding of ocean memory, but also to generate new ideas, projects, and partnerships.
Workshops are often followed by seed grant opportunities that support collaborative research across disciplines and cultures, helping participants develop and realize ideas which have taken the form of art exhibits, published manuscripts, and live performances.
Beyond our scheduled workshops, we also grow through opportunities that emerge from our community’s creativity and initiative. These have led to an ocean memory research cruise in the Salish Sea, thematic discussion groups (including ocean memory and the pandemic, and sound as memory), a webinar series featuring pairs of community members from different disciplines, and a residency program that nurtures creative and scholarly exploration.
