Ocean Memory Lightning Talk
Kismet. I discovered the Ocean Memory Project after I had exhibited a mixed media work entitled “Twelve Voyages,” about the millions of Africans lost to the depths during the transatlantic slave trade. I was reflecting upon how those lives lost can be remembered—a collective cultural memory that gets reinforced with every ocean encounter. I Googled “ocean memory” just to see what came up and discovered the website. At the time I could find no mention of the transatlantic trade on the site. I knew that the work I was doing as an artist, and as a UCI graduate student in visual studies, where I was considering issues of Black temporality and territoriality, could interact with the mission and activities of OM in a distinctive and meaningful fashion. Being involved with OM is not unlike purchasing a ticket to fly across country and then finding yourself on the moon: gazing back at the earth with a fresh eye while enjoying the energy and experience of your fellow travelers.
