Sapelo Island |
This workshop will feature formal presentations (some at the field station and some in the field or during nature walks) structured and unstructured discussions, creative activities and immersive experiences, and free time to connect with other attendees. The presentations will cover a range of scales upon which biological systems communicate and remember – from molecules to ecosystems and coastlines. The speakers will cover the following topics: human history and memory, including a focus on historical and modern human populations on Sapelo Island; the geological history of barrier islands; the role of chemical signaling in memory; the role of story-telling and science writing in ocean science communication; the impact of natural disasters on ecosystem dynamics, including stress-hardening and ecological memory in corals, and pollution and system memory loss resulting from the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Attendees are encouraged to work together to ideate proposals to pursue emerging questions related to topics covered during the seed seminar, whether addressed by speakers or emerging from other seminar activities. These proposals will be funded with support from our NAKFI Challenge Award. Details on the submission and selection process will be made available during the seed seminar.
